Men Forced to Wear Urinary Catheters for Acute Urinary Retention Have Prostatitis
November 01, 2006 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
Five men, who suffered acute urinary retention and were catheterized in order to urinate, presented to the Cebu branch of the Manila Genitourinary Clinic. All the men were previously diagnosed as having a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. Urologists had told all the men that they must undergo prostate surgery. All five men tested positive for prostatitis. The men were treated with repetitive prostatic massage, antibiotics, and alpha-blocker medication. All the men were able to urinate without a catheter and all the men have avoided surgery for over 2.53 years.
During treatment, statistically significant improvements occurred in symptom scores, prostatic fluid white blood cell counts, prostatic fluid red blood cell counts, urinary white blood cell counts, and urinary red blood cell counts.
The paper, “Repetitive Prostatic Massage and Drug Therapy as an Alternative to Transurethral Resection of the Prostate” was published as the featured article on Medscape General Medicine (www.MedGenMed.com), a peer-reviewed, Medline-indexed medical journal.
