Pomona, CA – TagWorld.com’s Patricia Dao met up with Thrice at Bamboozle Left 06’ at the Cal Poly Pomona Athletic Field to talk about the band’s tour and the latest on what they’ve been up to. Patricia: Are you guys excited to be here at Bamboozle today?
Dustin: Yeah, it’s gonna be fun. I’m excited that it’s outside. I like outside shows when they’re not super hot.
Pattricia: And are there any acts that you guys are excited to see?
Ted: Um, I think we’re all really stoked to see Brand New. Good friends of ours, good band.
Pattricia: Are you guys in the middle of a tour now or is this just a one stop for you?
Dustin: We’re at the end of a very small tour. We just did like a quick kind of southwest run and then we’re in the middle of writing and recording our next record.
Pattricia: Let’s jump into the “Illusion of Safety”. I know that was one of your first albums that really made the splash, that was really like post hardcore metal and now you guys are venturing off into a lot of different things. Can you explain what you’re going to do in the future?
Dustin: Uh, this next project is a lot of fun. We’re kind of in the middle of making. But it’s gonna be four discs. And they’re each themed to one of the four elements- earth, air, water, fire. Um, so they’re pushing into different directions in each way. Instead of us always pulling like a bunch of stuff into a small package. It’s giving a little more space. Um and so each thing is kind of moving sonically in those directions. Like fire is the heaviest one. Earth is real stripped down and acoustic stuff. So, it’s a lot of fun and real excited about it.
Pattricia: That’s really cool. And so when is that gonna come out?
Dustin: Hopefully Mayish.
Pattricia: And then “Vheissu” did really well as well I mean is the style gonna be a lot different from that album?
Dustin: I think in general it’s moving in the direction that we have been moving. If that makes any sense? It’s more like “Vheissu” than “The Artist in the Ambulance”.
Pattricia: Cool and any tours for you that are coming up?
Ted: Not really. We’re just kind of holding off for the next few months. Trying to get it all done, yeah.
Pattricia: So lets talk about bands and your influences. Is there anyone that stands out that has helped influence your music?
Riley: I think especially now, as far as bands that are influencing us, it’s like as broad a scope as it’s ever been cause of the four themed discs. You have acoustic stuff, which could be influenced by Tom Waits and any acoustic artist. I don’t really listen to a lot of that stuff but… or electronic stuff like how Radiohead kind of incorporates electronics into what they do. Or and the aggressive stuff is kind of like Issis or Converge. We’ve always been a band that takes from all those different influences. And now we’re letting those influences be what they want to be instead of trying to mash them all into one thing. So it’s kind of liberating in a way and exciting and challenging because we have stuff that’s jazzy, I’ve never really played a lot of jazzy stuff but I’m having to learn how to do it and that’s exciting.
Pattricia: I know the fans really love the acoustic sets that you do. And I know you’re coming out with a solo project. Is that right?
Dustin: Yeah, it’s just a little thing on the side that’s coming out in January.
Pattricia: Is that acoustic based, metal based?
Dustin: It’s more folky then we’ve done with Thrice. But the next record we’re getting more stripped down than my record is even, so.
Pattricia: And Teppei, I know you are doing a side project as well?
Teppei: Yeah I guess so, it’s really like a little thing that our friend Chris, he actually techs for us. So we just write little songs on the road just for fun and we got home this time and just decided to record them. So, it’s really just like a silly thing that we’re doing. It’s nothing really serious.
Pattricia: So you’re not going to be putting it out on any label?
Teppei: I don’t know, not as of yet.
Pattricia: On our site, we have a lot of unsigned artists that are just trying to break, and they use the internet to try to do this. Do you have any advice for them? And how has the internet played a role with you guys being successful?
Dustin: When we were starting, it was really in the early stages in the internet like becoming a tool for music, there were a couple sites. And I think that they helped us some. But I think at this point it’s probably one of they major ways that anyone finds out about music. And especially with sites like yours and Myspace-it’s facilitating you know, to get information on a band as well as having music to listen to, videos to watch, all in one format. Which I think is really good. So, I would tell bands to take advantage of those things as well as not forgetting about a lot of grass roots types of things like handing out flyers at shows. Making demos, actual physical demos and giving those out at shows….etc….
