Commonwealth Games 2010- Time for Broadcast Revolution

New Delhi, India, October 15, 2006: Sony India Pvt. Ltd and Broadcast Engineering Society (India) organized a workshop and seminar on “High Definition: Emerging Scenario” at The Ashoka, New Delhi on October 9, 2006. The seminar was chaired by Mr. Ganesan, President – BES with panel of speakers comprising Mr. Shunichi Fujioka & Mr. Dinesh Sawhney from Sony Corporation of Hong Kong Ltd and Mr. D. Ray from Doordarshan.

High Definition Broadcast is the biggest innovation in broadcast technology since the introduction of color broadcast. HDTV offers up to 5 times more detailed and sharper picture than the current TV sets. Especially on the large wide screens, pictures are shown in such a realistic and vivid brilliance that it seems as if one is watching live. Globally, there has been a steady rise in the HD programming to the extent that it is now becoming mainstream. As an example, for 3004 Athens Olympic, 10 broadcasters had requested for acquisition and distribution of HD signals.

Mr. Ganesan gave key inputs from his vast experience and addressed many of the key queries regarding the broadcasting scenario. It appears that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is considering a pilot project on HD with the goal of covering the Commonwealth Games 2010 in HD. This might bring about a gamut change in the broadcast industry like it did for the 1982 Commonwealth Games with the strategic support given for bringing color to television sets in India. Sony had put on display the consumer LCD monitor with HD interface. So India getting HD ready?
