UK Pick Up Truck Sales See Unprecedented Growth

October 14, 2006 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
Sales of pick up trucks in the UK are beating all previous records, with a 15.6 per cent increase over the 12 months to August 2006.

Total pick up sales now exceed 25,000 per year for the first time ever.

The double digit growth comes at a time when new car sales have seen a decrease of 4.3 per cent over the same period, according to industry figures released by the UK’s first website dedicated to pick up truck sales, www.pickupcity.biz.

Many of the major manufacturers are in on the act. The UK’s most popular pick up trucks are currently the Mitsubishi L200 with a 37% market share, followed by the Nissan Navara, Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Mazda B Series and Isuzu Rodeo.

Pick up trucks, already hugely popular in the US, are making a dramatic entrance into the UK market for many reasons. The latest generation of pick ups are more sophisticated than ever before, packed with features and accessories.

“Business users find that they offer the comfort and equipment levels of a car in the front, while they can be accessorized with a canopy to give the practicality of a van in the rear” says Andy Alderson of Pick Up City.

“They also have great appeal for those with large families, with trailers or caravans to tow, for dog owners or for extreme sports enthusiasts” Andy Alderson adds.

Pick Up City is also seeing dramatic growth in sales of new and used pick up trucks, particularly through contract hire and leasing. The web site is on target to deliver 1,000 trucks during its first year of trading and is expanding with national coverage.
