Axion Design Certified "Bay Area Green Business"

Axion Design is happy to announce its certification as a “Bay Area Green Business”. The Bay Area Green Business program was launched by the County of Marin in April 2002, and recognizes businesses that meet higher standards than required by law in energy and water conservation, waste reduction and pollution prevention.Axion began the certification process last year, but was stymied by a devastating flood that demolished the firm’s studio. “We just tried to look at things in a positive light, says co-owner, Judith deVito. “The flood really gave us the ability to start from scratch.” As construction began, thoughts turned to creating a new space that not only looked good, but felt good. Axion wanted to merge two passions: great design with green business practices. The company installed ceiling fans, purchased energy efficient lighting and appliances, and replaced toxic cleaning supplies with natural products from green manufacturers like Seventh Generation. “We are a committed partner to the Natural Products industry, and keeping those ideals in the studio seemed like a natural step. It’s just a feel good thing. You can’t lose, and we wholeheartedly encourage other businesses to contact the program,” says Sue Waiss, project manager at Axion.
The studio also takes the opportunity to pass this learning onto their clients. They’ve compiled resource information and vendor lists on sustainability practices, and offer these alternatives to their clients. “The goal is to take a hands-on approach in finding easy, cost-effect solutions to our clients’ packaging needs, while putting due consideration into protecting the environment. It’s becoming more and more clear that these measures not only have a dramatically positive effect on the environment, but that we’ll begin to see a positive fiscal impact for businesses. There are more and more consumers wanting to see these changes in the marketplace, and they are demanding it. Companies leading the way in this arena have an incredible opportunity,” says Robert Jigarjian, who heads the company’s sustainability effort.
Axion will partake in an official recognition ceremony before the Board of Supervisors in December of this year.
