Bingo goes from Church fundraisers to the Net and back again: a new program brings charity back into bingo

Bingo has traditionally been an important means to recruit funds for important social causes. Churches, schools, charitable organizations and fund-raising groups have been using Bingo to successfully raise funds for important social causes for decades.

In today’s fast-paced world, more and more people are choosing to play Bingo on the Internet from the comfort of their home. In this new setting, Bingo remains primarily a social game with players forming virtual communities as they play, but sadly the connection to charity has been all but lost.

Recently, a number of Internet veterans have decided to try to bring the spirit of charitable giving back into the game. To this end, they formed Bingohelps.com.

The new Internet venture has undertaken to donate at least 10% of whatever its members spend on online Bingo to charitable causes chosen by the members themselves.

The program is made possible by affiliation with leading online bingo websites that pay a marketing commission to Bingohelps.com which then makes the donations directly to the non-profit organizations.

"There is a lot of money being made out there. We see no reason at all why some of it shouldn’t be funneled back to the community.” says Nick Roberts, one of bingohelps.com’s founders.

"We have selected as beneficiaries of our program a wide range of respected non-profit organizations that focus on issues ranging from dealing with world hunger, to reforesting North America, to caring for alley cats in the UK. In the end, our members are the ones who choose which causes they feel are worthy of their support." Roberts added.

The staff has made efforts to keep the process as hassle-free as possible. Just clicking a link on the home-page is enough to join and make donations for as long as the members continue to play, but a simple registration allows members to choose the cause closest to their heart and to receive e-mail
reports about their giving, including documentation of the donations.

"The amount of possibilities for people to choose from on the Internet today is immense. But in the end, people do make a choice, and this choice has great economic significance. Our program gives people a chance to use this power to make their own contribution, where they feel it matters", Roberts concluded.
