UNCASVILLE, CONN. August 26, 2006 — Mohegan Sun is hosting a first-time social event to benefit the Connecticut chapters of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, in conjunction with the 41st Annual Jerry Lewis/MDA Labor Day Telethon.
The Mohegan Sun “Party for a Cure” on Sunday, September 3 promises to be an exciting evening with great food, drink, and entertainment. “Party for a Cure” will bring MDA sponsors and families served by MDA in Connecticut and Rhode Island together in the hours leading up to the Telethon broadcast, kicking off the fundraising marathon. The event will be held at Mohegan Sun beginning at 5 p.m.– with food served until 8 p.m.– and ending at 10 p.m. “Party for a Cure” will be in full swing as the Telethon begins its 21 ½ hour national broadcast at 9 p.m. EDT. Mohegan Sun, a regular supporter of MDA, will also be home to the Connecticut Telethon Pledge Center, which will collect area pledges and film segments to be broadcast locally during the Telethon.
Tickets to the “Party for a Cure” are available for $50 each. They may be purchased by calling MDA’s New Haven-area office at (203) 248-6500.
MDA’s annual Labor Day Telethon will originate from the new South Coast Hotel in Las Vegas and will be shown on nearly 200 “Love Network” stations nationwide. Locally, 2006 MDA Telethon coverage will begin from 9 to 10 p.m. on Sunday, September 3 on The CW 20, WTXX-TV. From 10:30 p.m. on Sunday until 6:30 p.m. on Monday, WTIC Fox-61 in Hartford will broadcast the 2006 MDA Telethon. The Telethon, MDA’s largest annual fundraiser, raised a record total of over $54.9 million in 2005, including about $1.4 million from Connecticut.
77.25% of every dollar MDA spends goes directly to research, health care services and education. Money raised in the Mohegan Sun “Party for a Cure” will support MDA-funded programs in Connecticut and Rhode Island, including hospital-affiliated clinics, support groups, and weeklong summer camp sessions for kids with neuromuscular diseases. Mohegan Sun also supports MDA through its “Double Play for MDA” program with the New York Yankees, in which Mohegan Sun donates $250 to MDA for every double play that the Yankees turn.
MDA is a voluntary health agency that forges partnerships among scientists, health care professionals and concerned citizens aimed at finding treatments and cures for more than 40 neuromuscular diseases that affect a million Americans.
