RICHMOND, VERMONT — August 23, 2006 — After years of not being available in audio format this Pulitzer Prize-Winning American classic is released in a new performance by Academy Award-winning actress Sissy Spacek.Caedmon (an imprint of HarperCollins), the publisher says of the printed version “One of the best-loved stories of all time, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ has earned many distinctions since its original publication in 1960. It won the Pulitzer Prize, has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than thirty million copies worldwide, and been made into an enormously popular movie. Most recently, librarians across the country gave the book the highest of honors by voting it the best novel of the twentieth century.”
This new audio version will satisfy a pent up demand especially by schools, libraries and parents of reading challenged students. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is taught in school curriculums, however students with reading difficulties are challenged to comprehend the printed version. These special needs students have had a disadvantage without an audio version being available since the previous publisher’s audio rights expired and were not renewed a few years ago.
Sally Bohen, co-owner of AudiobooksOnline.com says “We often get inquiries from educators who have special needs students or from parents of special needs children requiring an audio format to enjoy and study “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Many of these folks are desperate for their first copy or want to replace a worn out copy. Here is what some educators have told us:
“There is an entire population of children out there who don't process written language very well but are able to fully participate in the high school English setting by using a variety of coping strategies— one of them being audio books. This is not because the student is lazy but because they have a neurologically based processing problem.”
“I am looking for ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ on audio cassette or CD. I am an English teacher who has three Dyslexic students in my class. I would love for them to be able to enjoy this classic.”
“Is this audio book not available anywhere? My SPED students are required to read this for an English class and when they struggle with the readability, the content is lost.”
“I am trying to find To Kill A Mockingbird on CD. Do you know where I could find it? I work with students who have reading disabilities and books on CD is the best way to aide in their comprehension.”
Bohen says “We are thrilled to be able to offer an audio version of “To Kill a Mockingbird” again and the timing is perfect just before a new school year is about to begin. We are ready to ship within one day of receiving an order. We accept purchase orders from schools and libraries therefore they have become an important part of our business.”
