Eavesdropping Detection Requests Rising

An increase in eavesdropping detection inquiries prompted an Indiana PI firm to publish an advisory last month which addressed the rising public concerns about government spying. In the meantime, new concerns are being acknowledged in the bug sweep industry that some companies are preying on people who seek eavesdropping detection services. Therefore, Indiana PI, Tim Wilcox, is offering new information intended to help the public understand the real threats."Unless an individual is involved in suspicious activities, there is little reason to believe that the government would be spying on them," states Tim Wilcox, owner of the Indiana PI firm, International Investigators, Inc. "It is more likely that a spouse or business competitor would eavesdrop. In these cases, the most common method used is a cell phone tap, which is extremely difficult to detect and requires more than just a cheap off-the-shelf 'bug sweep device'." Wilcox is referring to the commonly-seen hand-held RF signal detectors sold by online spy shops. "With today's sophisticated technologies, these crude eavesdropping detection devices are nearly obsolete. That's why they're so cheap."
Mr. Wilcox further states that it is essential for companies and individuals to seek a qualified bug sweep professional, or 'technical surveillance countermeasures specialist', as they are called in the industry. There are a lot of untrained people in the security and investigations industries who claim to offer bug sweep services, but show up at a client's premises with little more than one or two hand-held RF signal detectors."
It's almost a 'catch-22' for people with eavesdropping concerns. Mr. Wilcox concludes, "To avoid the mistake of buying the hand-held bug sweep device, people hire a supposed eavesdropping detection professional, only to find that he's untrained and been scammed himself if he shows up armed with only off-the-shelf bug sweep devices." The Indiana PI recommends asking potential eavesdropping detection contractors to list all bug sweep training and qualifications before hiring them.
