Leading Independent Analyst Firm Showcases Growing Adoption of Data Warehouse Appliances

Netezza today announced that new Gartner research highlights increasing adoption of data warehouse appliances. The July 2006 Gartner “Hype Cycle for Data Management”(1) reveals that “the visibility of data warehouse appliances continues to build.”

According to Gartner, “Data warehouse appliances can simplify the data warehouse architecture and reduce the cost of data warehouse implementations. Another, potentially larger impact, is decreasing the risk of poor performance in the data warehouse because of inadequate configurations.”

“We believe this Gartner report reflects exactly what Netezza is seeing in the marketplace –accelerated acceptance of appliances that both speed and simplify data warehousing,” said Ellen Rubin, vice president of marketing for Netezza. “In the 2005 Gartner Hype Cycle(2), data warehouse appliances were predicted to hit the ‘plateau of productivity’ in five to 10 years. Now, just a year later, that forecast has been accelerated to just two to five years for mainstream adoption – a significant leap forward as data warehouse appliances continue to gain market traction.”

The Gartner report marks the latest in a series of research from leading independent industry analyst firms and associations, including IDC and The Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI), which indicates the growth of the data warehouse appliance market. With many organizations expected to at least double the size of their data warehouses over the next three years(3), there is a tremendous need for data warehouse appliances that can quickly scale to meet market demand.

The Netezza Performance Server® (NPS®) system is the market-leading data warehouse appliance, built specifically to analyze terabytes of detailed data 10 to 100 times faster than existing data warehouse options, at half the cost. The NPS system stores, filters and processes terabytes of records within a single

unit, analyzing only the relevant information for each query. Netezza has placed the CPU power next to the data, allowing the NPS system to speed through processes that would occupy most data warehouse systems for hours, or even days, thereby enabling dramatic increases in productivity across the organization. Customers who have recognized the performance benefits of Netezza’s approach include Ahold, Amazon.com, Cingular Wireless, CNET Networks, Debenhams, Epsilon, Orange UK, Premier, Inc., Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation, The Carphone Warehouse and The TJX Companies.
