He never had a formal golf lesson. He wasn’t even what you would call physically powerful. A worrywart is how many people described this golfer. He chained smoked. Sometimes he lost as much as 15 pounds during competitions because he couldn’t hold food down.

But Bobby Jones was a born to play golf. His swing was so fluid and so powerful golfers would emulate him for years.

Jones was one of those “once” in a lifetime athletes. He was so good the public forgot he was a boy. The pressure was on him to win. In the early years, you could see the stress oozing out in his volatile temper.

Jones had the "face of an angel and the temper of a timber wolf," sportswriter Grantland Rice said.

In 1930, he won the U.S. and British Open and Amateur Championships all in the same year. This was a feat that had never been accomplished before or since.

Just over a month later, Jones retired at the age of 28.

He and O.B. Keeler’s 1927 book, Down the Fairway: The Golf Life and Play of Robert T. Jones is considered to be one of the most sought after golf books in the 20th century.

A limited first edition, Jones and Keeler signed copy, went on the block April 13 at PBA Galleries in San Francisco and sold for $10,350.
