Buena Park, Ca- July 30, 2006- The residents of Buena Park received a special treat when the Polynesian Paradise Dancers (PPD) spread some Aloha spirit and performed at Boisseranc Park this past Wednesday evening. The special outdoor concert was part of the annual Summer Concert Series provided by the city’s Cultural and Fine Arts Department.“It’s always a great pleasure to share our love for the Polynesian culture with the community,” says Akemi Welsh, Director and Founder of the Polynesian Paradise Dancers. “We only hope that the audience enjoyed the show half as much as we enjoyed performing it for them.”
PPD’s vibrant show brought the audience to various Polynesian Islands by way of dance and music, beginning with a traditional Hawaiian Kahiko, or ancient hula, and ending with an exhilarating Tahitian number, featuring an electrifying Samoan fire-knife dancer. Audience members also had opportunities to learn a few moves themselves. Volunteers were invited to learn the famous hula, Tiny Bubbles, as well as a New Zealand Maori Dance using poi balls.
Established in 1993, PPD has made a name for itself, having performed all of the United States and abroad. Their resume includes ABC’s Dancing with The Stars, the premiere of 50 First Dates and Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary extravaganza. In 2005, the company completed their first national tour, educating elementary students on the Polynesian culture. They have also had the opportunity to perform at several international festivals held in China.
“Traveling and performing in China was an amazing and life-changing experience,” shares company member, Unica Luna. “I love what I do, and I am happy to share it with others,” she adds.
PPD aspires to entertain and open the avenues of dance to everyone so that they can share their love for dance and Polynesian culture with others.
