MDA SENDS 42 CHILDREN TO SUMMER CAMP AT CAMP BETHELWOODS

YORK, S.C., July 28, 2006—The Muscular Dystrophy Association will send 42 children and young adults with neuromuscular diseases to its annual summer camp August 6-August 11, 2006 at Camp Bethelwoods in York, S.C. for a wonderful week of fun and lasting friendship. Campers and counselors come from Charlotte, NC, Greenville, SC and surrounding areas. Press, MDA sponsors and volunteers are invited to VIP day on Wednesday, August 9, 2006 where they can enjoy a lunch provided by Bojangles and enjoy Wild, Wild West Day with the campers.
MDA camp programs offer the unique experience for young people with neuromuscular diseases to participate in a variety of events created to develop friendships, share interests and build self-confidence. This year’s camp theme “Time Warp” features a Medieval Day, a Wild, Wild West day, a Hippie Day and finally a Roarin’ 20’s Day where we will hold our annual end of camp dance. Some activities include a Dude Ranch, Line Dancing, Capture the Castle, a Flower Power Scavenger Hunt and tie-dying tee shirts.
Events for youth and young adults ages 7-21 begin Sunday, August 6 and end on Friday, August 11. This camp wouldn’t be possible without the support and continuous participation from the citizens in North and South Carolina. The cost of sending one child to MDA summer camp for one week is $600. The hard work and efforts put forth by our local communities enables these adolescents to experience a wide range of activities specially designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs all for free.
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat 43 neuromuscular diseases through global research programs, comprehensive patient and community services and far-reaching professional and public health education. Each year MDA provides more than 4,000 youths the opportunity to attend summer camp.
