Fox Chase Cancer Center Hosts Sarcoma Awareness Walk

PHILADELPHIA (June 29, 2006) - Help raise awareness at Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Sarcoma Awareness Walk on Thursday, July 6th at 12:00 noon. Participants can choose between a one-and-a-half-mile and three-mile route around the Fox Chase Cancer Center campus. Fox Chase is hosting the walk in conjunction with the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative’s Team Sarcoma 2006 project.
Team Sarcoma 2006 is an internationally coordinated event involving hundreds of people, worldwide. An “International Bike, Run, Walk and Swim for Sarcoma Awareness,” the project will help make tens of thousands of people aware of what a devastating and deadly cancer sarcoma is. Such awareness can potentially affect the lives of thousands of families and can aid in directing money toward research to find methods to diagnose and cure this disease.
Fox Chase Cancer Center, one of the few institutions nationally with a dedicated sarcoma program, is taking part in the Team Sarcoma 2006 project to help raise public awareness of sarcoma and funds for sarcoma research.
“Sarcoma is a rare disease with approximately 10,000 cases diagnosed yearly in the United States. This event is important for patients, families and caregivers to share their stories and experiences with one another and the greater community,” states Margaret von Mehren, M.D., director of sarcoma oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, a nonprofit charitable organization helping those dealing with sarcoma, undertakes activities that help improve the quality of life for people dealing with sarcoma. Central to this mission are the goals of increasing public awareness about sarcoma and about the lack of young adults in cancer-based clinical trials as well as raising funds for sarcoma-related research.
