Drug-Free Marshals [http://www.drugfreemarshals.org] and East Wave FM teamed up and visited some of the primary school in Lenasia, South Africa. Their purpose was to provide a message about the dangers of drugs and to hand out information fliers on various drugs like dagga (cannabis), cocaine, mandrax (a synthetic drug that is highly addictive), alcohol, heroin and ecstasy. Originally started over a decade ago by the Church of Scientology International [http://www.drugsalvage.org] as a community service, Drug-Free Marshals has spread internationally and has been adopted and supported by numerous community groups, police departments, radio stations and religious groups. The motto by which this campaign operates is these words from philosopher L. Ron Hubbard: "Save the child and you save the nation."
The day started with a live interview on East Wave FM with Ricky Delgado from Drug-Free Marshals and Simmi from East Wave. Schools visited were Libra Primary, Alpha Primary, Impala Primary, Park Primary and Progress Primary.
Ricky Delgado, the Drug-Free Marshals (DFM) coordinator, said "The importance of education and information about the dangers of drugs should not be downplayed. When one knows and understands just what kind of damage drugs can do, then one has to alert the rest of society."
Over 5000 fliers were passed out to the schools, lectures were given and student questions about drugs were answered.
"We are working to keep children drug-free. Without the work the Drug-Free Marshals is doing right here and now, children will fall into the drug trap. Now, with drug education, they have a chance to be clean and free of drugs." said Ricky.
