On July 7th, 2006 one man will attempt to break the standing world record of 133 BASE jumps in 24 hours by completing 200 jumps in a single day. The setting for this charity event is the Perrine Memorial Bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho, where Dan Schilling will leap from the Perrine Bridge and free-fall for three seconds before releasing his parachute for a 486-foot descent.
The bridge is the only manmade location in the United States where BASE jumpers – short for buildings, antennae, spans and earth from which participants leap.
His team, Project Warrior, will be there to assist him with his attempt to break the world record.
"Project Warrior celebrates the advances of individual freedom brought about by America, and in particular, our fallen special operations heroes,” said Schilling.
“These forces are killed in the line of duty on the order of four times all other service members combined. They leave behind shattered children at great disadvantage in pursuing an education.”
Funds raised through the event will be used to provide college educations for these children and administered by the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (www.specialops.org), a Tampa-based nonprofit organization that provides surviving children of special operations personnel killed in combat or training with a college education. Currently the Foundation has nearly 100 students enrolled in colleges and universities across the country.
BASE jumper Dan Schilling is chief executive of Kokopelli Western LLC, a consulting and development firm specializing in post secondary educations institutions. In his military capacity he is the commander of the 125th Special Tactics Squadron, Oregon Air National Guard. His 20-year career is exclusively in special operations including USAF Combat Control and US Army Special Forces. His awards include the Bronze Star with Valor and Joint Service Commendation medal.
He is coauthor of the book The Battle of Mogadishu from Ballantine Books. Dan collaborated with author Mark Bowden on the book Black Hawk Down and served as a consultant to Jerry Bruckheimer films on the movie of the same name. He worked extensively with the History Channel on its documentary on combat operations in Somalia.
