Backbone Networks Announces Universal Version of Commercial Internet Radio SoftwareWorcester, MA June 14, 2006 — Backbone Networks Corporation http://backbone.com today announced Version 4.1 of Backbone Radio Pro, its turnkey Internet radio station software suite. This latest version includes native compatibility with Intel-based Macs and new features specifically aimed at increasing the revenue opportunities of online radio stations. Among these features are clickable images and text, which allow listeners to conduct e-commerce while continuing to listen to the radio program, as well as demographic feedback, which facilitates targeted radio advertising.
“Backbone Radio v4.1 specifically addresses the need for Internet stations to become self-sustaining by delivering revenue generating features that focus on the commercial aspects of streaming,” said Richard Cerny, president of Backbone Networks, “We are particularly proud that our use of global media standards like QuickTime and MPEG-4 for open standards-based streaming gives users and broadcasters the widest range of listening choices, including iPods, Macs, PCs, and 3G enabled cell phones.”
"Powerful tools like Cocoa and Xcode have given Apple developers the opportunity to quickly and easily deliver Universal applications for our blazing fast Intel-based Macs,” said Ron Okamoto, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. “We’re delighted Backbone has developed a Universal version of Backbone Radio so broadcasters can combine breakthrough Apple hardware, open standards and the power of Mac OS X to profit from compelling Internet radio.”
In addition to the clickable URL features of Backbone Radio v4.1, which permits links to change for every song, commercial or program segment, the software also helps program directors decide what commercials to run at certain times of the day. Integrated real-time reporting tells the operator how many people listen to what programs or songs, at what time, for how long, and from where, based on potential geographical mapping of IP listener connections. This feature is intended to permit broadcasters to target advertising to those listening areas that it knows it is reaching at any moment.
Version 4.1 was developed in Cocoa and is compatible with Power PC and Intel-based Macs, and iTunes® to fully integrate automatic podcast generation into the radio mix. Now broadcasters can simultaneously webcast their streaming programs while commanding the software to create, annotate and post podcasts made from the program material, pulled from the station’s audio content database. The software also creates podcast chapters and inserts images specific to each chapter, playable on Photo or Video iPods®.
Backbone Radio Pro, a totally integrated radio station software suite, includes all the automation, streaming and content creation software to implement a complete MPEG-4 Internet station using Macs in combination with Linux or Mac OS X servers. The result is a live station with automated operation that allows remote event broadcasts, unlimited audience scalability and a powerful mix of multimedia radio consisting of streamed audio, images and text.
