How to Hire a Loser…There are many things that companies consider when making their hiring decisions. The greatest mistake that they make though is that they often are not considering the person in relation to the job and the company to the best of their abilities. This is how you hire a loser. Here are a few common mistakes that companies make in their hiring process which brings in bum employees instead of the stars that they initially believe that they are hiring.
No job description or analysis This is potentially one of the greatest components involved in the hiring process. Without this key information, those people in charge of hiring are not considering the whole picture. Certain duties, knowledge, or experience is easily overlooked if a full job description is not used in selecting employees to take over the given open position. How can you do a full job match with the candidates if you do not know what the job totally encompasses? It is an absolute must to know educational and experience requirements, all job duties and functions, and who this person works with and reports to in the job. Without the job description, it is very likely that you will hire a loser.
Overlooking reference checks or background checks This is one way that you could end up with an employee that you otherwise would not want. Business references will often tell you the ugly truth. If they were great or horrible, you will hear about it here! You could miss pertinent information if you do not speak with others who worked closely with the individual seeking the job. Also, if the candidate will not give a reference, this is very good evidence that they know that no one can speak favorably of them. Also, a criminal background will come up in the background check, which some people prefer not to disclose where they are legally responsible to do so. Failing to perform this step could end up making the company liable in a worst-case situation. Without the background information, you could very well end up with a loser employee.
Not interviewing or screening candidates fully The interview process is highly important in the selection of future employees. Substantial information comes out of interviews. Learn about who people are, what their skills are, what their personality is like, etc. This all affects how people will react in the work scenario. If the interview provides you with answers that would have saved you from ever bringing that person into your office, wouldn’t you rather take that half hour to qualify or disqualify the candidate legitimately? Ignore this step, and you could end up with a loser.
How can you ensure that you hire a star candidate? The easiest way to do this is to speak with a Staffing or Placement Agency. Qualify the agencies that you are considering and make sure that they cover all the bases. A good staffing agency should have phone screened and interviewed thoroughly all candidates that they send out. They should also take care of performing reference and background checks. The agency should request a job description so that they can perform the search to the utmost of their abilities. And above all, the agency should treat candidates and clients with an excellent level of professionalism and integrity. Acting legally and ethically is an expectation that companies assume, but many agencies do not act well in these regards. Be sure that the agency that you decide to work with observes EEO requirements and acts in the best interest of your search. If you select your agency properly, you should have no problem in hiring star employees from there on out.
