The events of 9/11 not only transformed America, but the entire world. As with the assasination of President Kennedy in 1963, no one who was alive on September 11, 2001 will forget what they were doing the moment news flashed around the globe that Al-Qaeda had launched a murderous assault on the the very pinnacles of American power- the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington. Sheldon Filger, who was living in New York City on September 11, 2001, recalls vividly the horror that marked that sombre day.As the fifth anniversary of 9/11 approaches, Filger has written a chilling novel about the next 9/11 attack on America. Entitled "King of Bombs," his novel describes an Al-Qaeda plot, with covert help from Iran and North Korea, to detonate a high-yield nuclear weapon in New York.
How likely does Sheldon Filger think that nuclear terrorism will occur on American soil? According to the author of "King of Bombs," the threat of nuclear terorrism is very real. The fact that Osama bin Laden and his most senior deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, remain at large nearly five years after 9/11 is a stark reminder that Al-Qaeda's fervently anti-American leadership have had ample time to plan a future attack on the United States.
"Mr. bin Laden has made it very clear that he intends to again attack the United States," Mr. Filger said. "Furthermore, his deputy, Mr. Zawahiri, has issued videotaped warnings that a future attack on America will be so devastating, it will cause Americans to forget the losses they incurred on 9/11 and during the Vietnam war," he added.
Many Americans have become complacent in the five years since 9/11, based on a false premise of security, lulled into a false sense of security, according the Sheldon Filger. The author of "King of Bombs" believes such feelings of security are misplaced.
"I do not believe that the absense of Al-Qaeda attacks on American soil since 9/11 is the result of the effectiveness of the American intelligence community or the Department of Homeland Security," Filger indicated, referring to the dismal performace of Homeland Security in the wake Hurricane Katrina and the continuing dissaray within the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). "The pattern of Al-Qaeda's previous attacks on American targets indicates that they are meticulous in their operational planning, and highly disciplined and patient in choosing the right moment to carry out their attacks. The more likely explanation for the five years interval since the last Al-Qaeda attack in that they are planning something that will at least match, and most likely exceed the impact of 9/11," warned Mr. Filger. "Based on past statements by senior Al-Qaeda leaders, it is very possible that the next Al-Qaeda attack on American soil will involve a weapon of mass destruction, possibly even a nuclear weapon, the scenario spelled-out in my book."
