NORTH SALT LAKE, Utah – May 20, 2006 – COLT Technologies™, a Utah-based developer of agricultural technologies today announced it has changed its name to TekVet™, LLC. In addition to the name change, the company announced it has moved its headquarters back home from Puerto Rico to a facility in North Salt Lake, Utah. The name change to TekVet is designed to simplify the company’s image and allow customers to better associate the company with the products it distributes worldwide.
“With the growth that we anticipate undergoing, we know we need to capitalize on the name of our pioneer technology to increase the customer recognition of our brand,” said D. Bret Smith, chief executive officer of TekVet. “We’re thrilled to come home to Utah where the TekVet System was originally developed, especially in light of the current financial struggles of the Puerto Rican government. Our new facility in North Salt Lake is perfectly fitted to our growing needs as an organization. We hope to become a valuable part of this community, as well as raise the bar for safe meat and dairy products for consumers everywhere.”
TekVet’s new facility is located at 685 North Main in an industrial region of North Salt Lake, and the 26,000 square-foot facility is equipped with more than 5,000 square feet of office space and includes conference rooms, engineering rooms, lunch rooms and a spacious customer service entrance area. The building sits on a 1.5 acre parcel with a rail spur that is conveniently located adjacent to a main Union Pacific rail line.
In addition to the office space, the facility boasts several sub-zero cold storage lockers, three shipping and receiving docks, five refrigerated holding and production areas, as well as significant space for dry storage.
TekVet, which is best known for its TekVet System™, an automated radio frequency (RF) wireless solution designed to constantly monitor the core temperature of beef and dairy cattle, while also providing the capability of real-time tracing and tracking of historical information, is making a major move into the beef marketplace with a product that is destined to change the face of meat and dairy production all over the world.
About the TekVet System
Central to the TekVet System is the TekVet SmartSensor™: a small wireless device that is attached to a cow’s ear and includes a flexible thermometer, a wireless transceiver and other electronic components. The TekVet SmartSensor is attached to an animal’s ear in much the same way identification tags are as used by beef producers, ranchers and dairy farmers.
Once in place, the TekVet SmartSensor constantly monitors the animal’s core body temperature and alerts management immediately of temperatures outside of normal thresholds. The data is then captured by TekVet SmartReceivers™ and transmitted wirelessly to the TekVet SmartManagement™ system then immediately uploaded to the company’s central database and network operation center in Utah for trend analysis and historical archiving.
Although the TekVet System is initially designed to monitor core temperature, future products are currently under development to also measure blood pH, heart rate and other vital signs. TekVet is currently adapting its SmartSensor to other large livestock such as swine, goats and sheep.
