Stone Sculptor William Nutt Selected for National Sculpture Society Winter Exhibition, "The Sea"

(White River Junction, Vermont) Stone sculptor, William E. Nutt, of Enfield, New Hampshire with a sculpting studio in White River Junction, Vermont has had two pieces of sculpture selected for the National Sculpture Society's (NSS) winter show, "The Sea,' in New York City. Both of the pieces selected are carved from stone quarried in Vermont. One stone sculpture is a life-sized puffin, entitled "Puffin', sculpted from Champlain Black Marble, a stone quarried on Isle LaMont in the Northern part of Lake Champlain. The other sculpture is a monumental shell, entitled "Pelican's Foot', carved from Swanton Red, a dolomite stone quarried in Swanton, Vermont. Nutt's pieces were selected from among 127 sculptors from around the United States who submitted works to the NSS jury. A total of 44 artists had works selected for the exhibition. The exhibition, which opens January 10, showcases contemporary works in a variety of media by some of America's leading figurative sculptors. Although the work in the show is stylistically diverse - ranging from the academic to the fantastic - the artists all share an interest in and commitment to realist sculpture and/or work that is inspired by nature and specifically in this case - the sea.

"The Sea' exhibition will be presented at The National Sculpture Society's headquarters and show space in New York, New York. The sculpture exhibition space is located in the lobby of the Park Avenue Atrium Building at 237 Park Avenue and 466 Lexington Avenues, between 45th and 46th Streets in midtown Manhattan. There is a reception on the 17th of January at 6:30 PM for the artists, guests and any interested parties. There is no charge for admission and the show is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM through April 1, 2005.

The National Sculpture Society is the oldest organization of professional sculptors in the United States and its current membership continues to contribute to the great public sculpture in this nation, as well as being represented in museum, corporate, and private collections around the world. Members include some of the world's finest sculptors, architects, art historians, conservators, and other allied professionals.


William E. Nutt is a juried member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) and the New England Sculptors Association (NESA) and has produced sculpture which is in various private collections along the eastern seaboard, from Maryland to New York to Northern New England, and across the ocean, in the United Kingdom. Additionally, stone carvings and stone reliefs of his have been displayed in juried shows at museums and galleries along the east coast, including the Cape Museum of Fine Arts in Dennis, MA, the Ward Museum of Wild Fowl Art in Salisbury, MD and now, the National Sculpture Society in New York. He has had stone reliefs which have appeared in award winning architecture. The 2004 Vermont A.I.A. Design Citation Award went to a residence that features his work in a carved fireplace relief. Nutt is presently represented by the Art of the Sea Galleries in South Thomaston and Rockland, Maine. He routinely advises on stone carving, but also teaches at a more formal level. In the spring of 2005 he will be teaching at the AVA art gallery in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
