The St. John Ambulance Brigade Singapore Zone 2 will be setting off for a humanitarian trip, on the 1st - 9th June 2006 to Cambodia, Phnom Penh. This 9 days mission trip, will involves various humanitarian activities in the remote parts of Cambodia, for example: health care and first-aid education
to the local villagers, health screening etc…
From the early 1970s, Cambodia had experienced a devastating period of civil strife, displacement of its population, foreign military occupation,
and extended political isolation. Years of war had led them to the total collapse of public services, including the primary health care system.
During the reign of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, Cambodian cities were depopulated and the country's economic and social infrastructures were largely dismantled.
As a result of the country's fractured health care infrastructure and widespread poverty, most of these victims have little access to appropriate physical, vocational,
or economic rehabilitation assistance.
With collaborative efforts from the Family Care Cambodia, Cambodian Red Cross and Project Khmer H.O.P.E. The St. John Ambulance Brigade Singapore Zone 2
is proud to be the fund raising and organizing committee for project 'Ray of Light, Cambodia'.
Our aim, is to promote and encourage indigenous capacity to provide a sustainable period in basic medical supplies, first aid training for young adults, health screening,
and also the donation of food and necessities in Cambodia.
A fund raising concert for this humanitarian trip, was held earlier at the Singapore Conference Hall on 15 Jan 2006. We were blessed, that the management of
Singapore Conference Hall has given us their full support by waiving the hall rental fees. Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Minister of Health was our guest of honor that night.
