IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ALEXANDER THE GREATDates just announced - An epic archaeological adventure across Turkey: April 21 - 9 May 2007
Due to unprecedented demand, Peter Sommer Travels has the pleasure to announce dates for its 2007 Alexander the Great escorted tour. The tour will be personally led by Peter Sommer, who in 1994 walked 2,000 miles across Turkey, from Troy to the site of the battle of Issus, retracing Alexander’s route. A British archaeologist and TV Producer/Director, Peter has worked on many acclaimed documentaries for British and American television, including In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great (BBC/PBS), Commanding Heights: the battle for the world economy (BBC/PBS) and most recently Tales from the Green Valley (BBC).
“My 2,000 mile walk retracing Alexander the Great’s footsteps was the start of an enduring love affair with Turkey, its history, its breathtaking landscapes, and above all its warm and hospitable people.” says Peter Sommer. “Our new escorted Alexander tour will visit some of the greatest ancient cities in the world on the trail of one of the world’s most extraordinary heroic figures. It’s a unique, once in a lifetime holiday.”
Starting in Istanbul we pay homage at the Alexander sarcophagus in the Archaeological Museum. Then we set out on an exceptional journey discovering the history, architecture, and personalities of the cities along his route. Troy, where Alexander ran naked around Achilles’ tomb. Ephesus, one of the best preserved classical cities in the world. Termessus, a rocky eyrie that said ‘no’ to Alexander and got away with it.
We’ll stroll along the sacred way to Apollo’s temple at Didyma, stand on Alexander’s hill at Sagalassos, from which he launched a bloody siege, and sail along Lycia’s timeless coast. This inspirational tour is a tale of romance, war and power, an amazing expedition full of unforgettable vistas and historical highlights in the shadow of a king and warrior who still excites the imagination 2,300 years after his death.
“For more than 2,000 years Alexander the Great has excited the imagination of people around the globe.” says Peter Sommer. “This was a man who inspired 45,000 soldiers to march for 12 years, beyond the known ends of the earth. He led them for some 22,000 miles, from Greece all the way to Afghanistan and on to India. By the time he died in Babylon at the age of just 32 in 323 BC, much of the known world lay at his feet. Who could not be intrigued and fascinated by such a figure?”
