Dyslexic Artists Art Show and Sale Includes Learning Disability Workshops.

Artists shine a light in Pine: An exhibit of dyslexic talent

"Shining a Light in Pine" celebrates the artistic accomplishments of the local and statewide learning-disabled community during a 10-day dyslexic art show in Pine, Arizona.

Area artists — young and old — will showcase the solace, the creativity and the talent hindered by the barriers of words, numbers and sentences.

Dyslexic artist Myra Kraemer, owner of Myra's Gallery in Pine, AZ spearheads the event.

"There is a stigma because people think if you can't read and write you're illiterate. And if you're illiterate, you're stupid," Kraemer said. "And the shame. You can't even imagine the shame that goes along with it."

"Shining a Light in Pine," kicks off May 11 and runs through May 21, and the exhibit, hosted by Myra's Gallery, is comprised of artists from all genres and media. Terri Bowersock of Terri's Consign and Design will speak at 5:30 p.m followed by John Corcoran - "The Teacher Who Couldn't Read."

Two days of workshops for adults and children, speakers, camaraderie, food and fun begin at 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 12 at in the Pine Cultural Hall, Highway 87 and Randall Place.

At 10:30 a.m. at the Pine Cultural Hall, there will be free early screening of children 4-5 years old for dyslexia.

Saturday May 13 is packed with activities for young artists, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with a lesson on pencil drawing by renowned artist, Bill Ahrendt.

Photographer and fused glass creator Bernadette Heath, painter Phil Yeh and sculptor Gail are just a few of the talented presenters throughout the day.

An artist reception from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. follows at Myra's Gallery, 3824 Highway 87 in Pine on Saturday night May 13, 2006.

Dyslexia is a neurological learning disability that impedes the development of language and comprehension skills, specifically reading, writing and spelling.

The International Dyslexia Foundation (IDF) reports that 15 to 20 percent of the American population struggles with a learning disability; 85 percent of those people have dyslexia.
