NEW YORK, NY – ARISING Group, Inc.’s Director of Business Development, George Karshner, will address business leaders at the annual conference of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) in Orlando, Florida on April 27, 2006. His presentation will help these professionals to understand the range and scope of threats facing business leaders at the executive and board levels. “Mitigating threats to business is a key component of national security,” Karshner explained. “Most American business executives do not see defense [in this case, business counterintelligence] as a priority. MBA education and our market culture prepare them for generating sales, maximizing profit, and insuring ROI. Loss prevention and physical security are left to the overworked gentlemen in blue blazers down in the lobby. The higher functions of defense are typically ignored until a crisis arises at which point the police or FBI are brought in —after the fact. Companies once burned in this way tend to take threat awareness and counterintelligence preparedness more seriously.” He added.
George Karshner is also President of the Business Threat Awareness Council (BTAC), a group he founded two years ago with co-presenter Tim Powell of The Knowledge Agency. BTAC is a voluntary group of professionals from the private and public sectors who work to improve threat awareness, promote best practices in threat management and business counterintelligence, and to disseminate this information to American businesses.
Business threats are internal and external and take many forms. The BTAC group follows threat trends in many areas including, economic espionage, fraud, brand piracy, counterfeiting, sabotage, computer hacking, as well as physical threats to personnel and company property.
Although America’s presumption of safety was shattered with the brutal attacks of 9-11, most businesses have done little to change their modus operandi. Tim Powell explains that “In many cases companies have hired executive-level security professionals, in some cases they have developed a coordinated approach, unfortunately in most cases, they are unaware of the range and magnitude of these threats.”
Karshner and Powell will show what businesses can do to understand these threats and prevent them from developing into economic damage. They will also share methods and resources for keeping a company informed about current and likely future threats.
