“If you are planning a move this spring, be on the lookout for bandit movers,” says Jason Hart of Renaissance Relocation Specialists. “Bandit movers appear to be legitimate but can turn out to be to a family's worst nightmare.”
Hart says the most important thing a consumer can do is hire licensed, insured movers. Verify the company is both licensed to do business in California by contacting the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), and a member of a professional moving association (like the California Moving & Storage Association). Hart also recommends getting a binding written estimate from the company subsequent to an in-person visual survey of your belongings.
