HungryFlix.com Official Launch! The Distribution Revolution is upon us!
April 17, 2006 (PRLEAP.COM) Entertainment News
South Pasadena, CA —April 17, 2006 —HungryFlix.com, the Internet’s first independent distributor of premium, indie video content exclusively targeted to portable media players, is officially launching today! After 6 months in Beta testing, the new site has over 800 members, 300 pieces of great independent content, compatible with Apple's iPod®, Sony's PlayStation® Portable (PSP™), and the upcoming Microsoft Origami Pocket PC project. The HungryFlix.com site had just under 1 million hits in March 2006, and will likely break the 1-million hit mark for April.
Industry estimates place combined global sales of the PSP™ and iPod® during Winter 2005 at nearly 30 million units. The upcoming portable PC from Microsoft, codenamed Origami, is expected to play the Mpeg4 format used by the iPod®, the PSP™ and other digital video players. There are over 50 million Pocket PC players in circulation currently. Exclusively devoted to Mpeg4 (iPod®- and PSP™-compatible) video content, HungryFlix.com fills a much-ignored void in the portable media market.
David Basulto, HungryFlix.com president and founder, explains, “This is a huge audience that is clamoring for content. Other than the mainstream television shows - like 'Lost' and 'Desperate Housewives' - that Apple is selling, there isn't a whole lot to choose from. Our aim is to change that.”
HungryFlix.com is drawing video content providers from across a wide range of genres. Basulto states, “We are so excited at the response we are getting from independent filmmakers. The market is wide open for shorts, indie films, documentaries, etc. If it can be converted to Mpeg4, we want it! There are so many great films that never get distribution; we want them to find a home at HungryFlix.com.”
Users at HungryFlix.com pay no membership fees, and full-length videos on the site cost as little as $.99. Users can also upload video for distribution on the site. Content providers set the prices of their downloads, so they’re always in control of their revenue. HungryFlix.com handles all hosting, marketing and technical assistance issues and prides itself on providing outstanding customer service.
Tempe DVD, distributor of cult hits like Dead and Rotting and Townies has just signed up for the HungryFlix.com service. Also onboard is award-winning filmmaker Lisa Hammer, whose film Crawley boasted rave reviews from Film Threat, Award Winning filmmaker Bob Bryan (Graffiti Verite’), Travel Documentary filmmaker Mike Shiley (“Tsunami”), and Award winning filmmaker Jamin Winans (“Spin”).
“We are getting some very entertaining content” Basulto says. Basulto also hosts the HungryFlix Podcast, where he interviews filmmakers with content on the site. “I like to educate our members who are interested in how films get made” Basulto said.
Basulto, an entertainment industry veteran, also hosts the popular Filmmaking Central Podcast. He is married to Loren Basulto, and the couple have a combined 25 years of industry experience.
From the portable video player owner’s perspective, HungryFlix.com’s goal is to give the people what they want: the widest array of compatible video content.
