The Collapse of Immigration Policy & The National Day of Action for Immigrant Justice

Hartford, Connecticut - Independent Vice-Presidential candidate Webster Brooks, of the Imperato / Brooks 2008 ticket, congratulated the hundreds of thousands of mostly Latino demonstrators for their massive turnout on the 'National Day of Action for Immigrant Justice'.

“We are witnessing a transition in the struggle to return responsible government to the American people.” Brooks continued by highlighting the contrast of events that happened last week on Capitol Hill with what we are seeing today. “April 10, 2006 will be remembered for two things. In the finest spirit of democracy waves of demonstrators nationwide utilized the power of free speech and peaceful assembly to petition their government and organize political pressure for change.

“Sadly no one was at home to deliver their message to our so-called representatives in Washington. Members of the “establishment” parties fled the halls of Congress to take a vacation after failing to pass an ‘illegal immigration’ reform bill. All the demonstrators could hear were the echoes of mud slinging and finger pointing. In one week, Congress went from a much-ballyhooed ‘breakthrough’ to yet another failure under the weight of ugly partisanship and backroom intrigue.”

Brooks is not surprised, “I’m sure the American people have become accustomed to Democrat and Republican failures in the most urgent tasks to provide good government, sound policy decisions, and leadership. This President and Congress have failed to act on every major challenge they have faced. From the Iraq War, to Social Security reform, to out of control federal spending, to health care reform, to Immigration Reform, they have been derelict in their duties and responsibilities to the American people."

Brooks noted the coming of age of the Hispanic community as a national political force. Fueled by Hispanic radio broadcasting, these demonstrations were not led by any political party or outsiders seeking to capitalize on the energy and passion of the immigration issue. This was an independent action. It will reach far beyond the Hispanic community, and impact the plight of millions of non-Hispanic immigrants in America. It will also force a renewed discussion about what it means to be an American, and what must be done to continue our nation-building into a vibrant democratic republic representing many peoples as ‘One America’.”

Brooks predicts a resurgence of active civic participation to come. The April 10 actions make it clear that non-responsive members taking paid vacations while their work is unfinished will no longer be tolerated. The agents of change are shifting from the hallowed halls of Congress or the White House to the voices of independent thinkers and activists starting a wave that will roll across America and refresh our spirit of participatory democracy."
