Hospital Turns to Perceptive Software's Document Imaging Software When Paper Becomes a Burden

SHAWNEE, KANSAS — Perceptive Software, Inc., today announced the successful deployment of ImageNow® document imaging and workflow software at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio. O'Bleness, a provider of healthcare services to Southeastern Ohio residents for more than 80 years, selected ImageNow to streamline the paper processes and solve paper storage issues that hindered the hospital's effectiveness. On a typical day in the 100-bed hospital before ImageNow, 500 to 1,000 pieces of paper were being passed around from department to department. Because of limited space due to expansion, the hospital was forced to rent storage facilities across the city. When the Medical Records department lost its storage space in the basement, the process of finding an imaging solution kicked into high gear.
"We were running out of room — fast," said Tammy Johnson, O'Bleness director of medical records and privacy officer. "Also, paper flow was out of control. It was time to start imaging."
ImageNow's value proposition registered with O'Bleness, whose mission is to provide superior healthcare at a cost that represents value to the community. The deciding factor was ImageNow's patented integration technology (LearnMode™) that guarantees rapid, cost-effective and flexible integration with any application, including the QuadraMed® Affinity, VitalWorks® Radiology and Lawson® AP systems the hospital utilizes.
"We looked at four systems and nothing had anything close to LearnMode. It is flawless," said Johnson. "The other document imaging systems required interfaces to our other applications, but ImageNow doesn't."
O'Bleness moved quickly to implement ImageNow in areas that needed it most. Need was based on which department was running out of room the fastest.
"The Cardiopulmonary department was completely out of room, so we installed ImageNow there first. They love it, and they have no paper," said Johnson. "Other departments were banging down my door to get ImageNow."
ImageNow's flexibility and scalability has allowed O'Bleness to employ document imaging and workflow in different ways in almost every department of the hospital. With a desktop scanner at every desk in Registration, patient consent forms, insurance cards, physician orders and other documents are available in the system immediately after check-in. All Radiology reports and EKGs are stored and routed using ImageNow. Every nursing unit has instant, single-click access to a patient's critical documents at the point of need. Patient Accounting tracks EOB information and Information Systems stores census lists and reports, among other documents.
"The response has been wonderful. Even the physicians are starting to use the system," said Johnson. "Every time I see someone in the hospital, they stop me and say, 'This is great!' "
Looking to the future, O'Bleness is building a state-of-the-art outpatient center that will rely heavily on ImageNow to route orders and manage information flow between the main hospital and the center.
