For Immediate ReleaseNYC Subway Musician Attributes Success to Freedom of Expression
Modern day troubadour and freedom of expression advocate, Theo Eastwind became an icon on New York subway platforms through years as a Music Under New York performer. The hole worn through the body of his acoustic guitar is a tangible reminder of Theo’s commitment to his music. Theo’s blend of edgy alternative strumming and graceful melodies quickly hook straphangers and have landed sales of thousands of CDs underground. Theo Eastwind’s fourth album release, The O, surfaced in record retail on April 4th.
Tourists often wonder how much a subway performer in the Big Apple can earn entertaining in the tunnels. Theo Eastwind sheds little light on that mystery merely suggesting the tips enable his survival yet demonstrating his freedom of expression is how he truly lives. Eastwind often reflects on his early days in the city when his expression barely earned enough for a slice of pizza, soda, and his daily board.
Theo Eastwind relocated from Vienna, Austria like so many immigrants hoping to find their slice of the American dream. After the promise of a job as a pastry chef in a Viennese bakery never materialized, Eastwind became inspired by an a cappella singer in the subway. Eastwind took his guitar to the tunnels and learned firsthand how to survive while developing a talent in songwriting. Now, ten years and four albums later, Theo Eastwind is an icon in the New York City underground. Eastwind’s talent is also starting to steal some street-level fame such as earning him top honors in the 100-musician Williamsburg Live Singer-Songwriter Competition.
Theo Eastwind’s fondest memory involves Johnny Cash. While playing in the subway one day, the Man in Black approached Eastwind and dropped a dollar in his guitar case. The words Johnny Cash told Eastwind as he tipped the brim of his hat still ring in his head, “You’re going places kid.” Music fans may play a role in deciding if Eastwind’s latest release, The O, will take him places after April 4th, but in Theo Eastwind’s mind, he need look no farther than exercising his freedom of expression in the NYC subway each day.
