April Fools Day seems the most appropriate day for Silly Jokes, the UK’s largest online retailer of practical joke items, to crack open its Joke Book to reveal the Top 10 towns and cities in the UK that buy practical joke items.

The top 10 was calculated by looking at the number of orders in the last year per 100,000 people in each city or town1 and it revealed quite a few surprises.

Chief SillyJoker Caroline Creasey commented, “ At SillyJokes HQ we have had loads of fun putting these tables together and must admit to being surprised at a few of the results. Who would have thought that Norwich and Ipswich would have ever been in the top 10 and more to the point we were shocked to see Blackpool in the bottom 10”.

1. Reading Be wary of those London commuters, they come bearing practical jokes. Or could it be the Microsoft office workers catching each other out?

2. Guildford Maybe it has something to do with the Surrey Uni being based there that has bumped it up into the number 2 place?

3. Norwich Are the residents trying to fight off their Alan Partridge inspired reputation a little too much by being the number 3 most popular place for buying practical jokes?

4. Ipswich Maybe its close proximity to the city in 3rd place means they are playing revenge pranks on each other?

5. Peterborough It may be famous for its ghost tours and archaeology, but could it just be practical jokers making things go bump in the night?

6. Oxford Those academics must be looking to let off steam via truly alternative routes.

7. Nottingham This city may have come in at number 7 but residents bought the highest number of Stink Bombs? Ew!

8. Chelmsford Its Common may be home to the highest number of adder snakes, but how many of these are real?

9. Exeter The South West’s only offering in the top 10? Maybe it is all the cider spurring people on to play jokes on each other?

10. Milton Keynes It may be home to the concrete cows and hundreds of traffic roundabouts, but the residents certainly know how to play a trick or two.

There was a real surprise at the other end of the spectrum with party-central Blackpool coming in the bottom 10 areas for people having bought practical joke items. The number one area for the least amount of practical joke items bought was Caerphilly in Wales.
