Palermo is the Sicilian Capital and is sited on a wide bay at the foot of Mount Pellegrino, which is rich in flora and offers the tourist an extraordinary seascape of Mondello being Palermo’s distinguished seaside resort. Apart from having a stunning historical centre and opulent orange and lemon groves (Conca d’oro), Palermo has an enchanting gulf hosting many sailing clubs, which also inspired the Sicilian artist Renato Guttuso in his works like ‘Cactus on the gulf of Palermo’ (1978). Between Palermo and Trapani there are two interesting anchorages to be planned these being Gulf of Castellammare and San Vito lo Capo. The Gulf of Castellammare has splendid coasts adorned with the wild beauty of the surrounding mountains; it hosts a wonderful Arabian Castle and is not far away from the Nature Reserve of the Zingaro, the first protected area of Sicily important for the abundance of rare plants and rich fauna hence it is ideal for picnics and excursions. A privileged destination for scuba diving is San Vito Lo Capo honoured with the Blue Flag of Europe, for the quality of its beaches. All these areas enrich Trapani’s Province, which is opposite to the Egadi Islands. Trapani is situated at the foot of Mount Erice covered with Mediterranean vegetation; moreover at a short distance from Trapani there is the spectacular town of Erice. The three islands that make up the archipelago off Trapani are called Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo (Egadi Islands); all three have enchanting coastlines and are surrounded by crystal-clear water. This archipelago is where the treaty for the end of the First Punic War (241BC) was signed, and consequently Sicily became part of the Roman Empire. More recently in 2005, the archipelago hosted the ‘Louis Vuitton Cup’ where Match Racing and Fleet Racing took place.
Descending coastwise a warm Mediterranean welcome awaits the visitor approaching Marsala, a town included in the Sicilian tourist wine-route for the homonymous Marsala DOC status wine. Marsala was also an ancient Maritime Republic and nowadays boasts one of the most modern and well-equipped ports. Moreover it is renowned for its archaeological sites and a full calendar of events of Sicilian music and folklore. Marsala is also awarded by the Blue Flag of Europe, for the quality of its beaches. After Marsala a must-see is Mazara del Vallo, which was an important Phoenician Port. The city of Mazara del Vallo is tied to an outstanding finding infact, in 1998 a bronze statue was found on the seabed representing a Satyr, a demon who formed part of the orgiastic cortege that accompanied Dionysus, the Greek god of wine.
