March 29, 2006 - Have you ever accomplished all your dreams? Did your most challenged dream come true? For a colon cancer survivor like Lindy Sue Johnson from Virginia, anything is possible. As an outdoor enthusiast, who loves kayaking, trekking and backpacking, she had several opportunities to travel around the world. Now was time for her most challenged trip, to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It was planned for June of 2005. But on Lindy’s birthday, March 29th of 2005, she received a devastating notice: Colon Cancer. When she was diagnosed with cancer, all her dreams disappeared, and her life became her most challenged dream. With the support of her family and friends, she recovered from a surgery, which removed eight tumors, and from numerous chemotherapy treatments. But her illness was not the only thing she had to beat; she faced the lost of a close family member, his 18 years old nephew. He had a brain tumor and, despite having several operations, the doctors could not identify what it was. That same year, Lindy had to overcome the mental challenges of losing his nephew, and also to fight for her life.
Even though the effects of the chemotherapy made her organism susceptible to the cold and her joints sore, she is ready to conquer her dream of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. From where she was one year ago, Lindy has come a long way, and now she is ready. “It has been a long time of being on an emotional roller coaster for my entire family. Although we are all still a bit raw, I am looking forward to the African air to help heal”, Lindy said.
Although she believes she is in good shape and has overcome some mental challenges, she needs special care. Lindy said her outfitter, Zara Tanzanian Adventures, has ensured that she will have everything she needs to accomplish her dream of summiting the mountain. Traveling with her will be her 74 year old mother, her sister, and a long time friend from New Zealand.
Through the past year, Lindy’s outlook on life has changed. Since the future is not predictable, she has learned to live “the moment”. The moments and memories she can share with her family and friend is what matters for her since that is what will last forever. As Lindy says, “Enjoy the journey. Enjoy the steps you take everyday to reach your goal.”
