Electronic Music Podcaster Releases New Show Of Live And Improvised Music

Mark Rushton recently recorded three remixes of earlier works at the Ambient Matyk Cafe, located in the New Bohemia section of downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The remixes are available in a podcast hosted by Mark Rushton called Live At The Ambient Matyk Cafe With The Buddha Machine.

First up is a live remix of the track The Seedling Mile. It is stripped down to little more than bass, scratchy guitar, electronica, and kalimba. It's a driving, groovy piece with various stops and starts. The original version of The Seedling Mile is available on Rushton's 2004 release, The Driver's Companion, currently available from iTunes, Amazon.com, most online digital download services, and direct from the artist on compact disc.

Next is a 6 minute track called Buddhametrics. It's another live remix of a track from The Driver's Companion originally called Psychometrics along with one of the loops from The Buddha Machine, an open source device made by a group called FM3. Psychometrics was a more beat-oriented rock song, but Rushton takes out the beats and guitars and adds the Buddha Machine for a haunting and ethereal effect. The original version of Psychometrics is available on Rushton's 2004 release, The Driver's Companion, currently available from iTunes, Amazon.com, most online digital download services, and direct from the artist on compact disc.

The final track for this podcast is called Drift Even Higher. It's a remix of a tune Rushton put out in January from the "What Does An Iowa Winter Sound Like?" podcast that he created in collaboration with bass player and ambientician Jon Harnish. Drift Even Higher features more bird sounds and road noise in the middle. Towards the end of the piece, Rushton plays a very pretty improvised keyboard solo. It's about 4 1/2 minutes long.

During the podcast, Rushton mentions a forthcoming live gig in Cedar Rapids, Iowa - a noise and experimentation concert at the Emerald City Ballroom on Monday, March 27th - as well as his participation in the latest edition of the Bound Off Short Story and Literary podcast as a sound arranger, mixer, and providing music for the interludes between stories.
