DVPT offers VoIP consultation based on TiQoS measurements

The German Association for Post & Telecommunications (DVPT) is now offering a consultation program for companies that wish to introduce voice over IP (VoIP). The program is based on measurement results concerning performance and speech quality in existing IP networks. As part of this program, DVPT employees are using Vierling’s TiQoS (Testing in Quality of Service) platform. TiQoS enables end-to-end tests between simulated subscribers in voice and data networks. The measurements can be used as a basis for determining whether a network is suitable for VoIP and whether any optimization is required. The DVPT is also offering support in analyzing the communications requirements and system implementation within companies. The primary objective is to develop integral long-term strategies for enabling the convergence of voice and data networks.

Neutral measurement results and consultation services
“We’ve gotten to the point where any company that is purchasing telecommunications infrastructure must deal with VoIP. In many cases, company employees are being forced into new ground”, noted Hans Joachim Wolff, DVPT’s head of corporate consultation. “Due to an increase in the number of requests from our members relating to the introduction of VoIP, we decided to develop our own consultation program. Our aim is to provide companies with neutral measurement results and consultation services that they can use as a springboard for obtaining bids from different suppliers.”

End-to-end tests provide dependable data
DVPT employees use TiQoS test equipment from Vierling to make the on site measurements. At least two portable TiQoS test heads are activated to make VoIP calls between different points and via different locations and subnetworks. The test heads simulate users by transmitting predefined audio files to one another. Using a built-in load generator, it is possible to simulate the influence of different load scenarios on the speech quality. “We are using TiQoS to measure what we believe are the most important parameters: Network performance and speech quality”, added Wolff. “Vierling’s end-to-end approach is the best way to obtain reliable results that we can use to make sound recommendations on how companies should proceed.”

Integral strategy and continuous monitoring
DVPT is also providing companies with support in the development of integral strategies for building convergent voice and data networks and for continuous quality monitoring of their networks. Here, the focus is on issues such as future bandwidth requirements, availability and security needs, cabling and power supplies, changes in network design & management, alternative telecommunications systems and software updates. DVPT is also proposing a solution for continuous monitoring of the most important quality parameters based on TiQoS. “Vierling’s TiQoS is a solution that is proven in carrier networks”, according to Wolff. “By using the portable TiQoS solution for introductory measurements and the software-based solution for long-term measurements, we have access to a platform that has proven its capabilities over many years in carrier class applications.”
