Monumental Baptist Church, once a station along the Underground Railway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is celebrating its 180th anniversary on Sunday, March 19, 2006. Monumental's story began during the third decade of the 19th century, thirty-seven years before Emancipation. It is the 2nd oldest African American Baptist Church in the State of Pennsylvania.

Rev. Dr. M. M. Peace, Jr., pastor of Zion Baptist Church, Brooklyn, NY (son of the late Rev. Dr. M. Marquette Peace, Sr., who served as Monumental's 19th pastor for 44 years) is the guest preacher for the 11 am service on Sunday, March 19th.

A 2nd service will be held at 4 p.m. on March 19th. The congregation will motorcade to "Old Monumental" where the Rev. Dr. William J. Shaw, pastor of White Rock Baptist Church, Philadelphia, PA and President of the The National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. is the keynote speaker.

This historic pillar of the community, Monumental Baptist Church, is currently under the dynamic leadership of the Rev. Dr. J. Wendell Mapson, Jr., its 20th pastor, who has served the congregation and the community at large, with distinction, for the past 18 years.
