Defeating Terrorism: Survival In The Face Of Danger

Worldwide terrorist attacks have relentlessly continued in recent months — from the bombing of underground trains and double decker buses in London, to recent suicide bombings at malls and bus stations in Israel. In a February 2006 Associated Press article, President Bush gives details of how the government defeated Osama bin Laden’s purported plans to attack the tallest skyscraper on the West Coast. Bush says, “The terrorists are weakened and fractured, yet they're still lethal. We cannot let the fact that America hasn't been attacked in 4 1/2 years since September 11th lull us into the illusion that the threats to our nation have disappeared. They have not." Survival in the face of terrorism will depend on our following the motto of the Scouts: “Be Prepared.”

Acts of terrorism include assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, bombings, cyber attacks, and the use of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. Terrorism, which is often done for ideological or political reasons, also includes threats of these acts and is intended to “terrorize” people. However, the message is clear: there is always something we can do about it, and “Being Prepared” is the key. U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says, “We urge all Americans to take some simple steps to prepare for emergencies, including getting an emergency supplies kit, making a family emergency plan and learning more about how to respond to emergencies that could affect your area.”

The Homeland Security “Ready America” project recommends putting together a kit that contains a week’s worth of water and non-perishable food, protective masks, battery-powered radio, first aid kit, flashlight, clothing and bedding. They also suggest storing a tent, sleeping bags, fire extinguisher, can opener, rain gear, and a map of the area for locating shelters.
