Data Protection Solutions (DPS) Settles Patent Dispute Regarding ATA Disk Mirroring
March 04, 2006 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
Arco Computer Products, Inc. d/b/a Data Protection Solutions (“DPS”), announces today that it is has settled a patent dispute with a Chinese technology company and its U.S. operating subsidiary. DPS accused the Chinese company and its subsidiary of violating DPS’s Parallel ATA Disk Mirroring patented technology (U.S. patent #: 5,740,397). Although the specific terms of the settlement are confidential, the defending company agreed to compensate DPS for prior use of DPS’s patented technology, and DPS has granted the defendant a license to use the technology on future sales of the accused products in exchange for a royalty. DPS and the defendant are both active in the Internal ATA Raid market where, DPS maintains other patents, such as Hidden Device Technology (HDT) for disk to disk backup (U.S. patent # 6,938,104) that may also offer additional value to the defendant’s products. DPS’s Parallel ATA Disk Mirroring technology allows a disk drive adapter to connect to an existing IDE parallel port on a motherboard or add-in card, reducing complexity for the user to install and maintain. “The DPS disk mirroring technology is widely adopted by OEMs and integrators, who design, manufacture and market special purpose computers sold to end-customers. These customers also do not want to have involvement in maintaining these devices,” says Itzik Levy, Founder and CTO of DPS. “Other technology approaches are dependent upon the operating system which can cause corruption of the OS and data in the disk mirroring process.” DPS’s technology allows for the simultaneous writing of data directly from the ATA Bus, eliminating maintenance requirements associated with changes in the operating system, updates, and the setting of IRQs, TSRs, and drivers associated with traditional approaches.
Both DPS and the defendant have expressed interest in and intend to explore mutually beneficial business opportunities between the two companies. Both parties agree to set up a Business Collaboration Committee to further explore potential areas of technology and business collaboration.
About Data Protection Solutions
Headquartered in South Florida and founded in 1989, DPS is a data protection technology provider, offering many unique and patented technologies. Both the company’s disk mirroring RAID controller and EzBackup® disk-to-disk (D2D) product lines, powered by the company’s patented DupliDisk technology, are designed to preserve the value of personal and corporate data. Data values are growing exponentially, and the high failure rate of tape-based backups and restores are a more serious threat to these values than ever. D2D backup provides cost-effective backup and storage up to terabyte capacity. It is now recognized as the “fail-safe” solution to data protection for SMB and SOHO applications and is also found in robust enterprise settings. The company serves the market through OEM relationships, distributors such as Tech Data Corporation, as well as system integrators, value-added resellers, and catalog companies throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East.
