Agrigento is Sicily’s richest archaeological treasure and it has always been described as the ‘most beautiful city of the mortals’ because it hosts one of the most reminiscent archaeological areas in the whole Mediterranean. The surrounding countryside and landscape are bonus elements to Agrigento. The town is the place of birth of the famous writer Luigi Pirandello, Nobel Prize winner in 1934. The house of Pirandello is a typical example of a building of the Agrigento countryside.

The present day city reflects its glorious past in the Valley of Temples, the sacred area of Akragas, one of the most important Greek Colonies. The temples of Concord, Hera, Zeus, Hercules, Castor and Pollux tag along one another in a unique archaeological stroll. It is interesting to point out that all the buildings face east, respecting the Classical criterion (both Greek and Roman) that the entrance where the statue of the god was housed could be illuminated by the rays of the rising sun, the source and blood of life. Apart from this, Agrigento has a magnificent historical centre, with its Cathedral founded by the Normans and the Church of Santo Spirito, which dates back to the 12th Century and is renowned for its Baroque stuccowork in the interior.

The coast of Agrigento stretches form Punta Bianca to Porto Empedocle, with San Leone being an excellent seaside resort where to enjoy the uncontaminated sea. In the Northern Coast of Agrigento, one can find the ancient thermal locality of Sciacca which name derives from Arab meaning cleft, referring to the caves of the nearby Mountain Kronion. The Romans named it Selinunte due to the vicinity of the homonymous centre.

The tourist visiting Agrigento in February, can attend to the Mandorlo in Fiore Festival (Almond blossom festival), for the remaining months of the year however, the visitor can try the local produce of grapes, cereals, olives, citrus fruits and fish.
After lodging in one of our Bed and Breakfasts nestled in this evocative scenario, which blends history and sea, the visitor can take a tangible souvenir made from local artistic ceramics and wooden objects, the rest will be all inscribed in the memory and which no possible words can describe.
