There are a number of harmful effects associated with lead exposure. Now, a study has added the development of cataracts in older men. To measure the men’s long term, cumulative exposure to lead, researchers analyzed their shinbones, where lead is believed to remain for up to two decades. The men with the highest levels were found to be 2.7 times more likely to have cataracts than those with the lowest levels. The researchers theorized that, over time, lead may contribute to a change in the cells that make up to a change in the cells that make up the eye’s lens, resulting in the clouding that characterizes cataracts. The study gave no indication whether the increased risk was associated with lead exposure at a key moment or to chronic exposure.Nearly half of all people will have a cataract by the time they are 65 years of age. Cataracts form slowly and do not cause pain but eventually impair vision and can lead to blindness. NeoVision Eye Center recommends preventive eye health care.
