Six Sigma Training Joins the Army

The Army has recently adopted the growing technique of quality called Six Sigma. “It's essentially to take the work out of a process and to apply it both to a factory-type operation or repair, and also to a headquarters operation, like the Department of Army,” said Secretary of the Army Francis J. Harvey at a Pentagon press briefing.

“Back in 1982 it was called Quality and Productivity Improvement. Then we called it Total Quality Management. Then we called it Business Process Re-engineering. We've had several different names for the same thing,” said Harvey. “You look at the way you do business, and you change it for the better.”

The Army isn’t the first place to implement these changes. “We have found that Six Sigma Training is becoming very popular in all sectors. Whether it is healthcare, banking, government, or manufacturing… it seems to have a place just about everywhere” explains Craig Setter, President of Aveta’s Six Sigma Online ( www.sixsigmaonline.org ).

In fact, recent studies show that more and more available management jobs are now requiring some type of Six Sigma Training for qualification. “Headquarters AMC has trained almost 200 people since it began its Green Belt, Black Belt, and Master Black Belt programs in Lean Six Sigma in November 2004,” stated Ron Davis, the AMC deputy chief of staff for Industrial Operations.

These quality improvements will not only lead to more effective organization in delivering their services, it will ultimately allow the organization to operate at a fraction of the cost. Whoever said you can’t have your cake and eat it too?
