NINE YOUNG SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS

NAMED 2006 BRICK AWARD WINNERS

New York- Do Something announces its annual winners, honoring nine young community service “rock stars” from across the country with BRICK Awards.

Since 1996, the BRICK Awards have funded young change-makers who identify problems in their communities, and then get up off the couch and do something to change our world. CNN has called the BRICK Awards “The Oscars for young social entrepreneurs.”

“These kids are amazing. Instead of being focused on reality TV and pimples, these kids have created Summer Camps for kids with cancer and built public libraries in their towns,” says Nancy Lublin, Chief Executive Officer of Do Something.

Since 1996, Do Something has awarded over 1 million dollars in community service grants and scholarships to young social entrepreneurs throughout the nation.

Thousands of kids apply and only nine winners are selected. These nine amazing young social entrepreneurs will be presented their awards at a star-studded gala in New York on April 11th. Last year, President Bill Clinton attended the event to hand out the awards and he didn’t even win anything.

Prince and Princess of Hope Pageant

Both grandfathers passed away from cancer, so she decided to help others battling this disease. Holds annual pageants for kids fighting cancer and other terminal illnesses.

Cell Phones for Soldiers

Collects used cell phones and recycles them for money. The money is then used to purchase pre-paid calling cards for soldiers in Iraq to keep in touch with their loved ones.

Talking Pages, Inc.

An aunt developed macular degeneration and could no longer read; Michael formed an online system that lends audio books to the visually impaired.

Francesca Tenconi, 21 NC
Children's Skin Disease Foundation (CSDF)

At 11 developed a skin condition that destroyed 85% of her body and almost took her life. Started a support group and Camp Wonder for kids who are suffering from skin conditions where they can go and just have fun.

Summer in the City

Set up carpool sites for youth in Detroit to give them the opportunity to help rebuild their city.

Ravneet Kaur, 22 NY
The South Asian Community Health Project (SACH)

Aunt died of cervical cancer 33 days after being diagnosed. Set up a mobile clinic for people of all backgrounds, providing free education, disease screenings and on-site physician care.
