Those watching the Fox 5 News on Monday night, would have gotten a glimpse, during their “New York Minute” about the Westminster Kennel Club show, of some unusual sweaters. Designer, Peggy Gaffney, was in town to designing unique hand knit sweaters that capture, in intarsia knitting, how the beautiful champion dogs would look just as they appeared before the judge. Gaffney’s Kanine Knits fashions have graced many top show dog owner. She works personally with each owner to discover his dog’s favorite activity, be it the show ring, obedience, agility, hunting, sledding or just couch potato, and uses that concept as inspiration for her one-of-a-kind design. She was in town as part of the “Green Room” in the Hotel Pennsylvania where owners and handlers prepare and condition these top canine athletes and where a special group of artists, and this haute couture designer meet with dog owners who are looking for that something special to celebrate the event.
Peggy Gaffney draws her design expertise from over 37 years in the world of dogs as a breeder/owner/handler of her champion Samoyeds of Westernesse. “That’s a lot of years looking at very good dogs,” she says. She uses that discerning eye to bring the grace and dignity of these canine champions into her remarkable sweaters. Her work can be seen online at kanineknits.com.
