All of Barcelona Designs reproductions are crafted following meticulous standards and processes that intend to stay true to the original creations by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and other designers from the modernist period of the late 20th century. Their measurements and features are virtually the same as the original items. Alternatively, all of the items are available in either Black or White upholstery, apart from the chair and ottoman, which are also available in Brown and Tan finishes. These items have been voted #1 in the US.
The replicas contemplated in this collection are all crafted entirely from premium full-grain aniline Italian leather (both in the body and the straps), and single-piece stainless steel of the best quality available. The cushions are manufactured by sewing together 40 individual leather panels, padded with high-density foam. Barcelona Designs uses braided thread with lockstitch technology in order to create a no-seams finish, in direct conjugation with the original mid-century prototypes. Both the panels and the buttons are crafted from a single leather hide in order to ensure quality and detailing. The first item on the collection, the Barcelona chair, currently sells for $1149.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed these pieces for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Spain, which is where their names come from. They were inspired by Roman 'curules,' an ancient type of seat that was reserved for those with political or military status. Only people with imperium, a Latin word that roughly translates to 'the ability to command,' were permitted to sit on one of these chairs. Curules have also been used in more recent times by European kings and rulers, and their name comes from the Latin word for chariot. Ancient curules actually featured the ability to be folded, and they were not meant for casual or elongated periods of seating.
