New Competitors and Acquisitions by Market Leaders: Medtronic, Intuitive Surgical Expand European Robotics and Surgical Navigation Systems Industry
November 30, 2016 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
November 30, 2016 - Vancouver, BC – According to a new series of reports on the European markets for robotics and surgical navigation systems by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), surgical navigation technology has become the standard of care in neurosurgery, with the rate of adoption increasing in other segments. In addition, the growth of the surgical robotics market is expected to broaden the variety of procedures that can be performed using a minimally invasive approach while reinforcing existing clinical benefits. The continuous improvement in navigation software as well as hardware will entice facilities to continually upgrade their systems to the most current versions. Also, the entrance of new companies who are looking to provide navigation systems at a more budget-friendly price will expand the market to smaller facilities who, in the past, could not afford top-of-the-line systems. The largest segment in the European surgical navigation market is represented by neurosurgery navigation systems and the largest segment in the European robotic assisted surgery system market is the MIS robotic device segment. Over 70% of these systems are outright sales to facilities, while the remainders are leased or consignment systems. The average selling price (ASP) of systems is expected to decline due to the cheaper cost of older systems as well as the increase in single platform systems being sold, namely ears, nose and throat (ENT) systems, which are considerably less expensive than cross platform alternatives.
"The ENT and spine navigation systems as well as the catheter and spine robotic system segments will exhibit the fastest growth," explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. "Germany, Italy and France continue to be the largest markets by a significant margin, accounting for over half of the total annual unit sales, while countries like Portugal have not seen significant activity in recent times."
ENT image guided surgery (IGS) systems have the lowest ASP since they are not cross-platform, although many spine and neurosurgery IGS systems have ENT capabilities. IGS systems with spine surgery capabilities have a very similar ASP to neurosurgery IGS systems as the majority of systems used for neurosurgery can also be used for spine surgery and vice versa. The spine navigation segment is not as mature as the neurosurgery navigation segment and therefore it is expected to gain market in the next several years.
Surgical navigation systems are often marketed by implant companies and bundled with other products. While robotics companies have traditionally been smaller and focused on a narrower range of technologies, partnerships have led to a series of acquisitions of smaller robotics companies by larger, more established medical device companies.
The surgical robotic systems market is currently dominated by Intuitive Surgical, while Medtronic leads the surgical navigation systems market. The market is expected to grow considerably as system sales increase in other markets than MIS, and revenue from procedures, maintenance and service contracts increase as a result of the larger installed base. Additional leading competitors in surgical navigation include Brainlab and Stryker. The surgical robotic systems market saw growth on the part of Medtech, Mazor Robotics and Stryker amongst others.
