Invacare, Philips Respironics, DeVilbiss Lead European Market for Oxygen Therapy Devices Driven by Increased Cases of COPD

August 8, 2016 - Vancouver, BC – According to a new series of reports on the European market for anesthesia, respiratory and sleep management by iData Research (www.idataresearch.com), the rise in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Europe has resulted in a greater number of new patients requiring respiratory treatment and assistance, serving to increase demand for devices in the oxygen therapy market. The market for oxygen therapy is broken into two types of devices: concentrators and transfilling devices, with concentrators further segmented into categories for ambulatory and stationary devices.

Among Western European countries, France has the largest number of patients on long-term oxygen therapy and the extensive use of oxygen concentrators is encouraged by some of the highest reimbursement rates in Europe. In contrast, the market for alternative oxygen therapy devices in Italy is well below what population levels or the number of COPD patients would suggest. This is largely due to the fact that the reimbursement and regulatory system in Italy is heavily weighted toward the use of liquid oxygen. France and Germany are the largest markets in Europe for oxygen concentrators.

"The number of patients requiring medical oxygen is expected to increase between 4% and 6% per year as the population ages and as incidence rates for chronic respiratory conditions increase," explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. "Growth in unit sales is primarily driven by increasing acceptance and adaptation of ambulatory concentrators within the ambulatory oxygen marketplace."

One of the primary drivers for sales in oxygen therapy devices is the move within the ambulatory market from traditional cylinder-based methods of oxygen delivery to ambulatory concentrating technology. While the ambulatory concentrators will always be a more expensive up-front cost to providers, experience with the new systems is beginning to demonstrate long-term cost effectiveness. Device sales have grown rapidly over the last several years as household users have begun to switch from delivered oxygen to alternative devices. However, this rate of adoption will diminish with time and replacement devices will begin to account for a significant share of the market.

Invacare is the market leader for oxygen therapy in Europe. They have a strong presence in both the stationary and ambulatory concentrator markets, as well as the market for transfilling devices. Invacare sells their stationary concentrators under the Perfect O2® and Platinum® names. Philips Respironics is the second leading competitor in the European oxygen therapy market. As part of the Philips family of companies, Philips Respironics has a large distribution network and significant marketing resources. The company has made significant gains in the concentrator market since the introduction of the EverGo® ambulatory oxygen concentrator in 2008. DeVilbiss is the third leading competitor in the overall oxygen therapy market in Europe producing one of Europe's leading transfilling devices, the DeVilbiss iFill® transfiller. Additional competitors in the oxygen therapy market include AirSep, Inogen, RanaCareGroup, SeQual, Siare and VitalAire among others.
