The 866 toll-free area code came out in 2000 and it never got as popular as it’s brother, the 1-800 number. A new study shows that 85% of Americans currently recognize 866 as being toll-free.

Two years ago, most people thought that 1-800 was the only toll free phone number. The public was not fully aware that 888, 877 and the newly released 866 numbers were also toll-free to call. Those statistics have changed and according to a 2006 survey conducted by Tollfreenumber.ORG, 85% of Americans aged 18-55 now know that 866 is toll-free. You can compare that figure to 2003’s estimate of 55-65%.

During a 2005-2006 survey of toll free numbers, it was found that the 866 area code recognition rates are up to 85%. That’s 85% of people knowing that 866 is toll free. 5-10% of people were not quite sure but they guessed that it was toll-free.
