Talc Powder Lawsuit Heads to Trial over Alleged Link between Johnson & Johnson's Baby Powder and Ovarian Cancer, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports

According to court records, the case was filed on behalf of a woman who developed ovarian cancer after using Johnson & Johnson's Baby Powder for decades as part of her feminine hygiene routine. During opening arguments on April 12th, the plaintiff's attorney asserted that Johnson & Johnson had been aware of the potential link between talc and ovarian cancer for four decades, but never warned women that the regular, repeated application of talcum powder to the genital area could endanger their health. Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Verdicts
Court documents indicate that Johnson & Johnson is facing more than 1,200 product liability claims involving its talcum powder products and ovarian cancer. Dozens have been consolidated in the Circuit Court of St. Louis, where the current trial is now underway. The 62-year-old plaintiff was diagnosed with endometrioid ovarian cancer at the age of 57. She claims that her decades-long reliance on Johnson & Johnson's Baby Powder for feminine hygiene, as well as existing endometriosis, raised her ovarian cancer risk by 214 percent.

This is the second talc powder lawsuit to go to trial in Missouri this year. On February 22nd, another St. Louis jury awarded $72 million to the family of a woman who blamed her death from ovarian cancer on Johnson & Johnson's Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower talc-based products. The verdict marked the first time that a jury ordered the company to pay financial damages in a talcum powder lawsuit. In October 2013, a South Dakota federal jury also found that Johnson & Johnson had failed to provide consumers with adequate warnings about the risk of ovarian cancer from talcum powder.
