11 January 2006—The Chinese law firm Lehman, Lee & Xu helped the representatives of a large, international company in separate meetings with representatives from the Mexican embassy and the Beijing Ministry of Commerce. The topic of discussion was adjusting the companies’ multi-level marketing framework to operating a direct selling company in the Chinese market, along with new rules about direct selling in China. Lehman, Lee & Xu, gave a presentation on the new direct selling laws. Since December 1 of 2005, companies are allowed to sell directly to end-users. Previously, companies could only sell wholesale. Now door-to-door sales is a possibility. However, multi-level marketing, where a seller recruits new sellers and receives part of their profits, is still not allowed.
One of the first private law firms in China, Lehman, Lee & Xu is one of the largest law firms in China and provides services in intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, franchise law, and other services.
