Marwood Inc. Cypress Veneer Featured in Design Solutions Project Highlighting Baltimore Casino
March 12, 2015 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
March 12, 2015 - Jeffersonville, IN. Marwood Inc., a leading provider of domestic and imported hardwood veneers in the U.S. and overseas, was recently recognized as the veneer supplier for the woodwork in the Johnny Sanchez Restaurant at the Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore, Maryland. The woodwork in the restaurant won the Architectural Woodwork Institute's prestigious National Award of Excellence and was showcased in the winter 2015 issue of Design Solutions Magazine. In designing the Johnny Sanchez Baltimore, the objective of Johnny Besh and Aaron Sanchez was to create a unique experience to compliment the restaurant's style of cooking. The style is contemporary, authentic and tactile, as well as rooted in tradition. The materials selected for the space were chosen to follow this program.
Marwood Inc. supplied the Reclaimed Sinker Cypress veneer and lumber used throughout the restaurant. Sinker Cypress is a historic wood, reclaimed from rivers and lakes after centuries of under-water preservation. Many logs were "lost" sinking during transport by log rafts to saw mills during Colonial times up to 1900. Scuba Diver "Axe Men" recover these logs today. The Sinker Cypress is recognized both for its tight growth rings and beautiful colors, coming from the minerals in the water in which the logs rested.
Typically Cypress trees are found in the swampy areas along the Southeast Atlantic Coast and the Gulf Coast. The Sinker Cypress supplied by Marwood Inc. for the Johnny Sanchez restaurant came from trees in the Cape Fear and Pee Dee River Basins in North and South Carolina.
The wall panels, sliding panels, banquette divider walls and other woodwork made from this River Recovered Cypress help create an original and inviting experience. The Cypress panels that adorn the restaurant feature an impressive and unusual Box Diamond joined pattern said to inspire a traditional "ojo de Dios" or Eye of God. The use of these Reclaimed materials in this woodwork represents an effective collaboration from all project partners, serving to capture the bold and genuine spirit of Johnny Sanchez.
Project partners included Woodworker Allegheny Millwork from Lawrence, PA, Architect KA, Inc. from Cleveland, OH, Interior Designer Friedmutter Group from Las Vegas, NV, General Contractor Whiting-Turner of Baltimore, MD, Photographer Alan Gilbert of Baltimore, MD, and Wood Suppliers Marwood Inc. and Sieling and Jones.
